Bobastro - Galeota Tourism

A Christian stronghold during the height of the Emirate of Córdoba era and a strategic site for consolidating the Caliphate of Córdoba.

Bobastro is one of the most legendary sites in Andalusia. It was the refuge of Omar Ben Hafsun, a renowned figure in Spanish history: born in Parauta, between the ninth and tenth centuries he posed one of the greatest threats to the stability of Emirate of Córdoba, as the Muslim territory was then known.

It was in 880 that Ben Hafsun made Bobastro, on a rocky hill close to Ardales and El Chorro, the capital of his domains. The military gains made by Omar Ben Hafsun, who led a rebellion of Muslims dissatisfied with the Emirate, caused a real headache for the caliph of the time, Abderraman III. So much so that, once he had quashed the rebellion in 928, he ordered a letter to be read in every mosque which boasted of finishing with Bobastro; his euphoria even played a part in the declaration that established the Caliphate of Córdoba, the following year.

The city of Bobastro also bore witness to Omar Ben Hafsun’s conversion to Christianity, when he took the name of Samuel, and a building housing a church and monastery was hewn from the local rock. This is the site’s prime attraction, as the only Mozarabic-style church in the region that was once Al-Andalus.

But there are other important sites to discover when you visit this historic stronghold, such as: the remains of the Alcazaba [from the Arabic word for citadel]; the ancient gate in the city walls, the Puerta de Sol, where you can see aljibes – underground water chambers from the Islamic era; finely-cut ashlar masonry; ancient silos, and the remains of buildings and roads.

Legend has it that a Catholic saint is also connected to this historical site. Born in Bobastro and daughter of Omar Ben Hafsun, Santa Argentea was martyred in Córdoba in 931

Bobastro is one of Málaga province’s truly unmissable sites: a treasure trove of history and culture, set against a stunning natural backdrop, and the subject of significant public discussion about its archaeological importance in recent years.
