A day in the life of a cowherd

Category:

Experience what it’s like to graze cattle for a day in the Andalusian countryside and discover the wisdom of those who carry out this age-old profession.

Can you imagine what the life of a cowherd or a shepherd really involves? Now you can experience it for yourself. One of the world’s oldest professions involves direct contact with animals, rural life and nature.

We invite you to spend a day with a cowherd in rural Andalusia. You’ll accompany them in all their daily tasks: taking the cattle up the mountain in summer so that they can graze on the nutritious pasture at an altitude; or taking them down the mountain in autumn to the stables and fields in the valley, to protect them from the harsh winter.

This is a golden opportunity for children to learn about the cultural and ethnographic values of rural life, through an experience that they’ll find really engaging.

This activity is also about reconnecting with history: treading the same path along which this region’s cowherds have taken their herds for hundreds of years, while trying this land’s typical delicacies, such as local cheeses, cured meat and sausages.

You’ll also be able to learn from the huge store of knowledge and wisdom that each pastor acquires: passed from generation to generation to ensure the profession survives. Cowherds know all the secrets of the countryside, the climate, nature and its sounds.

This experience is all about the real Andalusia, and it’s good for you too: a healthy walk in which you’ll discover new landscapes and breathe in fresh air, the smell of pine trees and fragrant broom bushes. After this day in the Andalusian countryside, you’ll see that nature really does nurture the soul.
